The healthiest way to lose weight is with a well-balanced diet and exercise. For some people, however, no matter how hard they try they just cannot get rid of certain stubborn areas around the neck, hips, tummy, chest, and thighs. This is where liposuction surgery can help! Liposuction involves the removal of localized fat deposits from different areas on the body, to slim, reshape, and aesthetically improve the proportions of the area. While these areas are some of the most common targets for liposuction, the procedure can also be performed on the upper arms, back, around the knees, calves, ankles, neck, and chin. Almost anywhere on the body, if you have an unwanted fat deposit that hasn’t responded to diet and exercise, then liposuction could be the best treatment to resolve the problem.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is Liposuction performed?
Liposuction is the surgical removal of fat through small incisions. Different types of anesthesia are available for this procedure, ranging from local anesthetic to numb the area, to intravenously administered sedatives, to general anesthesia. You and your doctor will decide together which option is best for you. Numbing fluid is placed in the area to be treated, the fat is broken up from its surrounding structures with a thin, hollow tube (cannula), and then it is sucked out of the body through a vacuum or syringe attached to the cannula. The patient wears a compression garment after surgery to decrease bruising, swelling, and local fluid retention, and to allow the skin to better mold around the body’s new contours during the healing process.
Depending on the site of the surgery, the doctor may also place small temporary drains in the incisions from the procedure to aid in the removal of excess blood and other fluids. Before you leave, you will be instructed on how to properly care for the treated area, and will likely be given oral medication to reduce the risk of any infection. Your doctor should also discuss warning signs of infection or other issues following surgery, and schedule a follow-up appointment to monitor your progress.
Liposuction surgery is a very powerful procedure to sculpt your body when performed either alone or in combination with other surgeries, such as a tummy tuck, breast lift, or thigh lift.
Where can the removed fat be injected in my body?
The fat that is harvested during liposuction can be purified and then injected into various parts of the face or body, such as the buttocks, breasts or the cheek areas, to restore lost volume or create curvier contours. A trend that is growing in popularity is the Brazilian Butt Lift, a treatment in which fat deposits from different areas of the body are reinjected into the upper portion of the buttocks to increase volume and create a curvier, more defined shape. It is also possible to inject the fat into the breast for a “natural breast augmentation,” an increasingly popular choice for women who want a natural solution rather than using silicone or saline implants. The harvested fat is processed in a sterile environment and then injected into the desired area. It is interesting to note that the fat is not only excellent at restoring volume and lifting sagging skin in certain areas, but it also has a rejuvenating effect on the skin itself. This younger looking appearance may be due to the presence of growth factors and stem cells within the harvested fat. As it is your own body material, there is no risk of rejection.
Will there be scars after Liposuction?
Scars can occur when a surgeon makes an incision, including liposuction. However, the scars from liposuction are tiny as minimal access is needed to create a dramatic improvement in body contour! The scars are placed strategically in locations that are hidden and heal well, such as the natural lines and folds in the skin.
Will Liposuction help me get rid of loose skin?
No, liposuction will help to reduce fat deposits underneath the skin, but this procedure does not remove sagging skin. If you have sagging skin, it is very likely that you would benefit from another procedure such as a tummy tuck, thigh lift, or arm lift. While liposuction can be an effective treatment option on its own, many patients benefit from a combination of multiple procedures. A person who has liposuction performed may, for example, find that they need excess skin removed from the site of the liposuction. Every body heals differently, so skin may naturally adjust to slimmer dimensions after surgery, or it may need further treatment to achieve a firm, trim appearance. The open and ongoing communication with your plastic surgeon before and after every procedure is important in fully understanding the options that will best achieve your personal aesthetic goals.
There are several types of Liposuction, so which should you choose?
There are many different types of liposuction surgery, each appropriate for specific body areas or conditions:
- Suction Assisted (traditional) Liposuction
- Laser Liposuction
- Vaser Liposuction
- Ultrasonic Liposuction
- Tickle Liposuction
- Power-Assisted Liposuction
The body-sculpting lipo treatment chosen with guidance from your surgeon should be the procedure that will achieve the result you envision. Each method varies in the results it produces, and you may need various liposuction methods to create a more youthful, firm, and attractive body contour.
The most modern liposuction techniques provide patients with big advantages, as the procedure is less difficult to perform, particularly in body areas with dense and fibrotic fat (more rigid fat deposits), scarred areas, or fat pockets left from earlier liposuction treatments. All your questions and concerns about how these specific body problems can be addressed and restored will be answered in a comprehensive consultation with our surgeon.
Post-Surgery & Compression Garments
After the liposuction is performed, a compression garment is helpful to reduce swelling, decrease the risk of fluid accumulation (seroma), and apply even pressure in the area treated with lipo. This is helpful in speeding recovery time and achieving smoother outcomes.
