Revision Rhinoplasty in Miami

Revision or corrective rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty, or a nose job, is commonly regarded as the most complex procedure that cosmetic surgeons perform. As such, they are unfortunately also the ones that most commonly go wrong. When an inexperienced or under-qualified surgeon attempts a rhinoplasty, the results can be disastrous, leaving the patients with more problems than they had pre-surgery.

Patients may be left with aesthetic irregularities and deformities, or even disruption to the airway that could cause significant difficulties with breathing. What’s more, having undergone this first surgery will make the additional procedures needed to correct it even more complicated than the original rhinoplasty. Scar tissue, thicker skin, and a shortage of cartilage are all complicating factors that can make the corrective surgery more difficult. For this reason, only an experienced plastic surgeon with an excellent track record should perform revision rhinoplasty.

Revision or corrective rhinoplasty, can be even more challenging than primary rhinoplasty since the support structure of the nose is often already weakened significantly, and a new surgery will have challenges in dealing with old scar tissue. These two factors are the major reasons why Dr. White’s approach to revision rhinoplasty often involves placement of cartilage grafts in the nose, which he usually obtains from the nasal septum or ear. Dr. White strives to deliver the best revision rhinoplasty Miami has to offer. He will review with you what your nose looked like before surgery, what the current aesthetic result is, and then how you will proceed together to achieve the nose that you wanted the first time. If you are having breathing troubles after your initial rhinoplasty, Dr. White will also address these issues and review with you some solutions.

Revision Rhinoplasty Procedure

How Revision Rhinoplasty Surgery Works

Whenever possible, the cosmetic surgeon will try to perform what is called a “closed rhinoplasty,” meaning that the incisions made are isolated to the inside of the nose, leaving no visible scarring. When this is not possible, an additional small incision will be made underneath the tip of the nose in an “open rhinoplasty.” For revision surgery, an open rhinoplasty may be necessary to allow for fuller access to the nose’s underlying structure.

Once the incisions have been made, the skin will be lifted to reach the bones and cartilage underneath, which may then be altered, rearranged, or removed. In cases where the original, or “primary” rhinoplasty involved the removal of too much tissue, the surgeon may harvest cartilage, bone, or fascia from the nasal septum, ear, temple region, or rib to then use in the reconstruction of the nose.

Additional Reading

Dr. Jeremy White sees Miami revision rhinoplasty patients who have already suffered the experience of undergoing cosmetic surgery only to be horribly disappointed by the results. This can happen due to mistakes made by an inexperienced surgeon, unrealistic expectations set by the doctor, poor healing or postoperative complications, or some combination of these factors. For this reason, it is of the utmost importance that the patient and surgeon have an open understanding of what kind of results can be expected. Patients going in for a revision rhinoplasty should be aware that the extent of damage done by the previous surgery may limit what can be achieved aesthetically.

Common Reasons for Revision Rhinoplasty

Dr. White will perform a full examination

  • Removing a residual bump on the nasal bridge addressing nasal tip bossae (bumps)
  • Establishing an improved balance between the nose and other facial features
  • Nasal collapse that requires major nasal reconstruction – this is particularly important because structural issues like these can cause breathing problems and other complications
  • Aesthetic concerns – a previous rhinoplasty may have left the nose uneven, unnatural-looking, or obviously surgically altered. It is also possible that a patient is simply not as pleased with their altered nose as they expected to be, sometimes due to unrealistic expectations set by the original doctor. A skilled, competent, and dedicated cosmetic surgeon will use digital alteration and other tools to make sure you have the full concept of the expected result to avoid any unpleasant surprises.

For our Miami revision rhinoplasty patients, Dr. White will perform a full examination and will address any issues related to nasal breathing as well. This is often a major concern since many surgeons make the nose smaller and remove too much of the supporting cartilage, which leads to blockage of the nasal breathing passages and nasal sidewall collapse. The nasal septum may not have been addressed appropriately or at all, which leaves problems with breathing that could be worse after surgery.

How Long Will Recovery From Revision Rhinoplasty Take?

less stressful than your first procedure

Recovery after a revision rhinoplasty procedure will vary, but typically you will find that recovery time is similar to what you experienced in your initial rhinoplasty procedure. You may even find that your recovery is faster and less stressful than your first procedure. You may need some assistance from a friend or family member for a day or two, but you will quickly regain your independence.

Immediately Following Revision Rhinoplasty Surgery

return home the same day

The revision rhinoplasty procedure will take one to three hours, and is typically performed on an outpatient basis. You will be able to return home the same day as your revision rhinoplasty procedure, driven by a family member or friend. You will be prescribed an antibiotic and pain medication to make your recovery more comfortable, and are advised to simply rest and relax for the first few days after surgery. A plastic splint will be placed on your nose to expedite the healing process and keep the treated area stable in shape. In addition to your prescription medications, you can also use an ice pack to reduce any swelling the occurs during the initial healing process.

Activities to Avoid During Your Revision Rhinoplasty Recovery

For the first week or more, you will want to limit your activities to facilitate the healing process. Avoid strenuous activities like exercise, heavy lifting, or excessive bending. Use a few fluffy pillows or a wedge pillow to elevate your head above your heart while sleeping. Wear a hat when going outside for long periods of time to protect your nose from the sun’s rays.

When can I Return to Work After Revision Rhinoplasty?

The nature of your employment will determine when you are able to return to your regular duties. You will likely only require one week off after revision rhinoplasty, but you should still avoid strenuous activities in and out of the workplace for a few more weeks. A follow-up visit will be scheduled with Dr. White to confirm that you are healing as you should, and he will advise you when it is safe to resume more strenuous activities like any vigorous exercise or work-related activity.

Revision Rhinoplasty Results
