What is the Difference Between Rhinoplasty for Men and Rhinoplasty for Women?

The aesthetic goals

In general, the techniques used by plastic surgeons for both male and female rhinoplasty are the same, though the aesthetic goals of the patient are often quite different. In women, the angle between the nose and the lip tends to be more obtuse, with a delicate upturn to the nasal tip that does not create excess nostril show. Women tend to have a nasal tip that is more delicate and the transition from the forehead to the nasal root is more gentle. Both men and women usually appreciate a straighter nose on both side and front views.

What our clients have to say…

Male RhinoplastyFREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

One of the biggest concerns that we get from our patients for male rhinoplasty in Miami is how long they will have to take off from work. We recommend at least one week off from work so that we can get you through your immediate recovery period and remove your splints. There should still be no heavy lifting or strenuous activity for two weeks postoperatively. The great news is that Dr. White tends to use a closed rhinoplasty approach with minimal incisions, so this decreases your swelling, bruising, and downtime from social and work activities.

Although Dr. White is extremely delicate in his male rhinoplasty procedures, your nose still needs time to heal and recover. Please refrain from running for two weeks and from contact sports for six weeks. This will help you to attain the best results after your procedure.

Some of the swelling will start to resolve already by the second week after your procedure, due to Dr. White’s minimal incision, minimally invasive approach to the procedure. Despite this, it will take approximately a year for all of the swelling to go down and for you to be able to appreciate your final result fully, particularly in the nasal tip area.

Many patients who intend to undergo rhinoplasty surgery may completely forget to ask questions regarding what they should do before the actual surgery takes place. The sheer excitement and level of nerves can play a part in this lapse.

To start, it is quite important to discontinue using vitamin E or herbal supplements at least two weeks prior to your rhinoplasty surgery as some of these may increase your tendency towards bleeding after surgery. Patients should also cease smoking four weeks before surgery. Nicotine has been found to inhibit the healing process after the rhinoplasty procedure has been completed because it impairs the blood flow to tissues that need nutrients.

If possible, enlist the help of a relative or close friend who can be with you once you are out of surgery. It is great to have some support and someone to help out with small tasks and medications. You should plan to take at least 3 days off from work and 7 to 10 days of social downtime before you get your nasal splints removed. These details should be covered ahead of time, at least two weeks prior to the procedure.

A nose job, technically known as rhinoplasty, is a type of surgery on the nose to reshape or improve its function. There are a number of medical issues why someone would choose to undergo such a procedure, including breathing problems, trauma, or birth defects.

Dr. White is one of the best rhinoplasty surgeons in Miami, and he will thoroughly evaluate the structure of your nose and nearby facial features. Following this evaluation, he will use his insight into whether or not such a surgery is possible or realistic to achieve your particular desires and goals. Next, the surgery itself, which is an outpatient procedure, will involve general or local anesthetic to sedate the patient. In open rhinoplasty, the surgeon will then cut across the base of the nose and reshape the inner bone and cartilage to ensure a pleasing appearance can be accomplished. Closed rhinoplasty, an alternative surgical approach, avoids a cut on the underside of the nose (columella) and uses only incisions inside the nose where they are not visible. Overall, the procedure is quick, easy, and relatively painless for most patients, though there are some exceptions on occasion.

Following the successful completion of the rhinoplasty procedure, patients will begin their aftercare. The aftercare procedure will be different for everyone, as some may experience more pain or swelling than others. For the most part, however, severe pain is quite uncommon with this type of outpatient procedure. Vicodin or Percocet should work to reduce any pain or swelling experienced for the first few days after the surgery is completed.

For the first two nights, your ability to sleep may be hindered after the surgery, but this improves quickly. The external nasal splint and, if deviated septum surgery was performed simultaneously, the internal nasal splint are removed in the office one week after surgery. Over the next few weeks, you should avoid overly dry environments, and use saline spray several times per day to prevent dryness or crusting. Finally, avoid blowing your nose unless your surgeon has cleared you. Overall, the aftercare process is quite simple and is mostly common sense for letting your nose heal.

After the procedure, many Miami male rhinoplasty patients are curious to know exactly how long the recovery process will take. Again, this is different for everyone. For most, it will take a few weeks for the majority of the swelling to completely dissipate. Once the bandages are removed after one week, your nose may appear swollen. By the end of the second week, the swelling and bruising should be improved dramatically. By the 3-4 month mark, most of the swelling will be gone, though the nose may appear larger than it was previously when taking pictures.

For some patients, it may take up to one year for the new shape of their nose to fully come to fruition. Many will wait 6 weeks before going about any major social engagements, just to be on the safe side. The healing process can be embarrassing for some individuals who worry about the swelling or bruising of their new nose in the beginning, but we find that Dr. White’s preferred endonasal, closed rhinoplasty approach helps to minimize this problem and get patients through the recovery quickly and safely.
