What are Lip Fillers?

If you’re looking to enhance your overall lip appearance, lip fillers are the perfect non-surgical cosmetic solution. This treatment involves injecting a dermal filler, typically made from hyaluronic acid, into the lips to add volume, shape, and definition.

Hyaluronic Acid

Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance found in the body that helps to hydrate and plump the skin. When used in dermal fillers for lip augmentation, hyaluronic acid can add volume and shape to your lips while improving overall lip texture and appearance. Hyaluronic acid-based lip fillers are temporary, typically lasting between 6 and 12 months.

Juvéderm

Juvéderm is a leading brand of hyaluronic acid-based dermal fillers that can be used for lip augmentation. Juvéderm VOLBELLA XC is a specific product in the Juvéderm line that is designed to add subtle volume to the lips and smooth the appearance of fine lines around the mouth. The results of Juvéderm VOLBELLA XC can last up to a year.

Belotero Balance

Belotero Balance is another hyaluronic acid-based dermal filler that can be used for lip augmentation. This product is designed to provide a natural-looking result by integrating into the skin’s tissues and filling in lines (including smoker lines around the lips) and wrinkles. Belotero Balance can be used to enhance the lips and improve overall lip shape and definition. The results of Belotero Balance can last up to 6 months.

Am I a candidate for Lip Filler?

Most individuals who desire fuller, more voluminous lips are eligible for lip filler treatment. However, some factors may affect eligibility, including:

  • Allergic reactions to the ingredients in the fillers
  • Active cold sores or infections on the lips
  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding

Common concerns that lip fillers can address:

  • Thin lips
  • Lack of lip volume
  • Uneven lip shape
  • Fine lines and wrinkles around the lips
  • Downturned corners of the mouth
  • Loss of definition in the lip border
  • Asymmetry between the upper and lower lips

Consultation and Preparation

During our appointment, we’ll take the time to review your medical background, go over your aesthetic goals, and check if you’re an appropriate candidate for lip filler therapy. The preparation for the treatment is minimal and may include avoiding blood-thinning medications, like aspirin and ibuprofen and other medications, before the procedure.

Choosing Lip Fillers

There are several types of lip fillers available, including Juvéderm and Belotero Balance. The choice of filler depends on the individual’s facial anatomy and cosmetic goals. The treatment is customized to each patient to ensure natural-looking results that complement their unique features.

Your Lip Filler Treatment

Lip filler treatments typically involve injecting a hyaluronic acid-based dermal filler into your lips to boost volume, shape, and definition. At our practice, we use Juvéderm VOLBELLA XC and Belotero Balance as our lip filler products.

The treatment typically takes about 30 minutes to complete and is performed with a topical anesthetic to minimize any discomfort. A nerve block can be performed as well, but is not usually necessary. During the procedure, the filler is carefully injected into the lips in small amounts, with the doctor carefully monitoring the results to ensure a natural-looking outcome.

Lip Filler Results, Recovery, and Aftercare

Results from lip filler treatment are typically visible immediately after the procedure, although some bruising and swelling may be present in the treated area for a few days. It is important to follow the aftercare instructions provided by the doctor to ensure optimal results, including avoiding certain foods and activities that may irritate the treated area.

Generally, our Miami lip filler patients can resume regular activities immediately following the procedure, although it is recommended to avoid intense exercise for the first day or two to minimize swelling. The results of lip filler treatment can last anywhere from 6-12 months, depending on the specific product used and individual factors such as metabolism and lifestyle. To maintain results, patients may require periodic touch-up treatments as the filler gradually breaks down over time.

Lip Filler Swelling Stages

Immediately Following Your Procedure

Immediately after your lip filler procedure, you may experience a degree of swelling and redness around your lips. This is common and should subside quickly.

Day One

The intensity of inflammation reaches its peak the day after lip filler injections.

Day Two

Two days after your procedure, your lips may still be swollen, sensitive, and bruised. They may also feel “bumpy.” This is not uncommon and should subside within a few more days.

Day Three

As you reach day three, most of the swelling should have subsided. Your lips may still feel slightly tender or sore to the touch, but they should look more natural.

Two Weeks

After two weeks, any residual swelling or bruising will likely be completely gone. Your lips will look fuller and more plump than they did before the procedure.

Four Weeks

At four weeks post-procedure, your lips will have settled into their final shape and size. They should look natural and symmetrical.

Lip Filler FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Lip fillers can cause some discomfort during the injection process, but most patients report only mild to moderate pain. Topical or local anesthesia can be used to minimize discomfort.

Lip fillers are generally considered safe, but as with any medical procedure, there are risks. These are extremely rare, but can include infection, allergic reaction, and migration of the product.

Most lip fillers are not permanent and will eventually be absorbed by the body. The duration of the results depends on the type of filler used and the individual’s metabolism.

When administered by a qualified and experienced injector, lip fillers should not ruin your lips.

It is generally not recommended to have lip filler injections while pregnant or breastfeeding as there is not enough research on the safety of the procedure at this time.

It is recommended to wait at least 24 hours after having lip fillers before eating or drinking hot or spicy foods or drinking alcohol. This is to minimize the risk of swelling or irritation.

The length of your results depends on the specific filler used and your individual metabolism. Generally, follow-up treatments are recommended every 6-12 months to maintain optimal results.

The cost of lip fillers can vary depending on the type and number of syringes used.
