Botox, Dysport, and Xeomin are injectable medications (neurotoxins) that relax certain facial muscles on the forehead. These muscles make the “11” between your eyebrows and the horizontal lines on the upper forehead when you scowl or look up. These injectable neurotoxins can also be used (off label) to decrease wrinkles around the eyes and other areas or even to create a chemical brow lift! It takes a few days for the medicine to take effect, but there is little to no bruising and no downtime! The effects of Botox, Dysport, and Xeomin are even more powerful when combined with facial filler injections.
All three of these products are derived from botulinum toxin type A and the effects last approximately 3 months. Botox was the first neurotoxin to be FDA approved in the United States for facial rejuvenation. It takes approximately 5-7 days before you, the patient, begin to notice the muscle relaxation.
Dysport is newer to the US market after having been tested for many years in other countries. This is made of a smaller protein than Botox, which may lead to a quicker onset of its relaxing effects at 3 to 5 days post-injection according to some studies. Some research has also shown, however, that it might not last as long as Botox in certain cases.
Here at ARC Plastic Surgery, we pride ourselves in keeping up with the latest products and procedures. Xeomin is the newest neurotoxin to arrive in the U.S. It is the most purified derivative of botulinum toxin type A between these three compounds, which theoretically decreases the chance that you will develop resistance to the medication.
