As we age, we lose volume in the face and start to develop wrinkles around the mouth, forehead, eyes, and other areas. Facial fillers are an excellent way to restore this volume loss with minimal to no bruising and no downtime! Certain fillers are available “off the shelf” in the ARC Plastic Surgery office and many of these contain numbing medication. In addition to the medication within the filler, Dr. White uses a specially compounded numbing cream to make your experience comfortable and relaxing.
These facial fillers are ideal to soften wrinkles that are present when facial muscle are not activated, which makes them excellent tools to use alone or in conjunction with Botox / Dysport / Xeomin.
Restylane, Juvederm, Juvederm Voluma, Perlane, & Belotero: These are off-the-shelf hyaluronic acid compounds, which means that they are made of some of same components that are present in your skin. Each product is of a different consistency, which means that different ones are helpful to treat different wrinkle areas. The products last approximately 6 to 12 months, depending on where they are injected. They also have the advantage that they can be dissolved or reversed with hyaluronidase enzyme if there is a product related problem.
Radiesse: This product is made of calcium hydroxylapatite microspheres and is much firmer than the hyaluronic acid compounds. As such, Dr. White thinks that it is most powerful to build up weak cheek bones and a sagging jawline (off label). This product is FDA approved to treat smile lines, marionette lines, corners of the mouth, pre-jowl sulcus, and chin wrinkles.
Sculptra: This product is made of poly-L-lactic acid, the same material that is used in many absorbable sutures. What makes this filler different is that is attempts to help your body build new collagen in depleted areas. This happens slowly over months and often requires multiple treatments, however the results can last for more than 2 years after your last treatment, but results can vary from person to person.
Laviv: This is a brand new product on the market that takes advantage of some of the latest techniques in tissue engineering. Dr. White takes biopsies from behind your ear in the office, sends the specimens to the lab, and then injects your own living fibroblast cells back into your wrinkles. This does require more of an investment up-front, but the results have the potential to be longer lasting than some of the other products.
Fat Injection: Fat graft injection is a surgical procedure that is performed in the operating room. Dr. White performs liposuction, isolates the most dense and pure fat cells, and then injects them in the face to restore facial volume. This procedure requires a donor area for fat and often necessitates multiple injections, but the surviving fat is permanent! Dr. White has written a book chapter on the topic of fat injection to enhance lips in “Autologous Fat Transfer.”
