Gynecomastia – Male Breast Reduction
In terms of having cosmetic surgery, women are no longer the only ones having work done. More and more, plastic surgery procedures for men are on the rise. This is due to the fact that men have concerns about their own bodies:
- Nose concerns
- Aging faces
- Excess fat
- Loose skin
However, one of the most commonly requested male cosmetic procedures is that of male breast
reduction. An enlarged male chest that is not solely caused by muscle growth is called gynecomastia. Some people will mockingly call this “man boobs,” but it’s far from a joking matter. This tissue is a combination of both fat and glandular tissue, which is much more firm and fibrous than fat alone.
What Causes Gynecomastia?
Frequently, certain medications, marijuana use, long-term use of steroids, and a few other health problems can lead to gynecomastia. It’s more common than most people would expect. In fact, 70% of boys develop some form of it during puberty; luckily, most cases of gynecomastia in teens will resolve by themselves. However, men can still develop this chest enlargement later in life due to the same estrogen hormone changes that occur later in age.
Can Gynecomastia Be Corrected With Chest Exercises?
If a patient truly has gynecomastia, which is a hormonal phenomenon, then chest exercises will not
eliminate that firm glandular tissue. It’s true that weight loss can help to decrease the amount of fat in the chest for some men, but for others, doing a lot of chest exercises will build more muscle and push the tissue further outwards. This can lead to the appearance of puffy nipples.
Who Is a Good Candidate for Male Breast Reduction Surgery? How Is It Performed?
Any man that has concerns about the enlargement of his chest not due solely to muscle growth and who is healthy enough to have surgery is a candidate for a gynecomastia procedure. The surgery itself is an outpatient one, depending on the extent of the enlargement and the skin’s strength in the area. The procedure involves liposuction of the chest, with or without the removal of glandular tissue, through a small incision around the nipple. When there is extreme skin laxity, some of it may also be removed in the chest surgery. This surgery to correct gynecomastia is a satisfying procedure for male patients who have concerns or are self-conscious about their enlarged chest. With the male breast reduction, confidence boosts dramatically.
How Much Does This Cost?
Depending on the type and extent of the surgery that will be performed, the cost can range from $4,000 to $6,500. This price covers the surgeon’s fee, the anesthesia needed, and the facility costs. In the grand scheme of things, most of our patients who have the gynecomastia surgery done are satisfied with the results and feel it’s worth the price.
