Your Options for Breast Augmentation
Many women of all ages choose to have a breast augmentation procedure for a number of reasons. Some would like a more fuller profile while others are looking to correct a noticeable breast asymmetry. No matter your reasons, it’s important to know what your options are before your surgery.
Here are your options for breast augmentation and what you need to know about each option.
Filler Types
In general, there are three types of fillers used in breast augmentation procedures: silicone gel, saline and highly cohesive silicone. The silicone and saline options are usually round, while the highly cohesive silicone – sometimes called “gummy bears” – can come in round options and be shaped. All three options differ in price, feel and the types of incisions needed.
It’s important to remember that none of these options is “the best” one available. The right filler will depend on you and what your needs are. Your plastic surgeon will be able to help you decide on the best breast augmentation for you.
Incisions
These days, skilled and highly qualified plastic surgeons can make breast augmentation scars almost invisible, even to patients themselves. Some of the different incision options include:
- Peri-areolar: Incision made around the areola, often hard to see with the pigmentation of the area.
- Transumbilical: Incision made above the belly button. No scars on or near the breast.
- Inframammary: Incision made under the breast so it’s easy to conceal.
- Trans-axillary: Incision made under the armpits. No scares on or near the breast.
Depending on the results you want to see, your doctor may use any one of these incision options to perform your surgery. If you have any concerns about what your scars may look like, sit down with your plastic surgeon and discuss your options.
