- Male pattern baldness
- Balding or thinning on top
- Receding hairline
- Hair strands have become finer and thinner
Advanced Hair Restoration Treatment for Men
The FUE procedure produces a dramatic improvement for men who are experiencing thinning or balding. Male pattern baldness appears on the crown, the front hairline, and at the temple. The FUE hair transplant procedure restores the natural hairline by transplanting viable hair follicles into the area. These follicles are harvested from the back of the head where the follicles are still producing thick, healthy hairs. Ready to look younger and more vital? Talk to us about the FUE procedure.
What is a FUE Hair Transplant?
Follicular Unit Extraction is a hair transplantation method that takes groups of individual hair follicles called follicular unit and then transplants these follicles to a thinning or balding area, along with the body tissues that protect the follicle and keep it viable. The FUE method differs from the FUT/strip method which harvests a strip of tissue containing hair follicles and dissecting them into transplantable units. This results in a long linear scar on the donor area, limiting the hairstyles available for those who want a more discreet result.
Benefits of FUE
FUE has less recovery time than FUT or strip methods, typically only a few days. The procedure is less painful because of the tiny size of the harvest area. There is little to no downtime, and patients can return to work the next day in most cases. For those men who enjoy a close haircut, this is the perfect way to have thicker, fuller hair. No stitches are needed with the FUE method. The FUE hair transplant method does not produce a large, visible scar. In the FUT and strip methods, staples or stitches are used and require longer healing time. The FUE and strip methods leave a visible lateral line typically on the back of the head. For many men, this means wearing their hair longer in the back, restricting common hair styles, like buzz cuts or fades.
Follicular Unit Extraction produces natural-looking results that mimic pre-hair loss hair growth and thickness. This method also allows for detailed matching of hair growth patterns ensuring the hair looks and feels like the original growth pattern. Many men are surprised at how natural and familiar their post-transplant hair looks and feels.
What should I expect with a FUE Hair Transplant?
Dr. White will meet for an initial consultation to discuss goals and to assess your current hair loss pattern, thickness, and growth. He will be identifying similar thicknesses and texture of hair to address specific areas of hair loss you are experiencing. Working with you to determine the desired outcome, Dr. White will discuss the best course of treatment
Once the procedure is scheduled, it will be important to cut your hair very short. This may require shaving the area. Hair regrowth occurs quickly, commonly within one to two weeks. The treatment area will be numbed with a local anesthetic so the procedure is pain-free. Dr. White will mark the treatment areas, the donor sites and the transplant sites.
The FUE Procedure
The healthy follicles will be harvested with a specialized tool to ensure the maximum number of follicles retain viability. Each follicular unit contains about four individual follicles and the natural supporting systems that facilitate hair growth. The donor follicles are kept cool and hydrated while they are prepared for implantation.
The transplantation sites will be prepared at the same time and the follicles will then be strategically inserted. Anywhere from 500 – 3000 follicular units will be gathered and transplanted, depending on the needs of the individual patient. The entire procedure is done while you are resting comfortably. The procedure is highly personalized and meticulously executed, and as a result the procedure can take several hours.
Recovery time with FUE Hair Transplants
One of the most dramatic advantages of FUE hair transplants is the fast recovery time. Patients are often fully healed within one to two days. The procedure is safer and carries less risk than traditional hair transplant procedures. The most common side effects are minor redness and bleeding directly following the transplant, resolving in one to two days. Some patients may have mild swelling that clears within a few days. Small sites make for fast healing, low risk, little pain, and no stitches to remove. Hair regrowth starts soon after the treatment, becoming visible within three to eight months. The full result in new hair growth is apparent within a year to eighteen months.
How effective is FUE?
FUE results are similar to the FUT or strip methods in effectiveness and follicle retention, but involve less pain, less recovery time, and less scarring. The angle of the hair growth, growth patterns, and hair thickness are matched with the FUE method. We are committed to providing our patients with exceptionally natural-looking results, with thicker, healthier hair.
Am I a good candidate for FUE Hair Transplant?
FUE is low risk, so there are very few factors that would make disqualify patients looking for a hair transplant procedure. Dr. White will personally discuss any concerns or questions you have about the procedure. Age is a factor in choosing the right treatment for hair loss. As with any procedure, we evaluate your medical history prior to treatment.
