At ARC Plastic Surgery, we strive to deliver the best Septoplasty Miami has to offer. The nasal septum is the wall between your nostrils that separates the nasal passages. It supports the nose itself and directs airflow in the correct directions. Though it feels soft, the septum is actually made of a thin bone towards the back and cartilage near the front portion. Due to being so thin, it can be easy to break the septum or cause damage.

What is Septoplasty?

straighten the septum

Septoplasty or deviated septum surgery, is used to straighten the septum when it crooked or has been broken or seriously damaged. The surgery is generally performed alongside other treatments for nasal breathing problems, but can also help some patients who have recurrent nose bleeds or sinusitis. In general, a septoplasty is only required when breathing problems begin to develop in the patient or if snoring during the night does not improve over time with medical therapies, such as nasal steroids or antihistamines.

Preparing for a Septoplasty Procedure

discuss any risks

Before you schedule your septoplasty, it is best to meet with your chosen plastic surgeon to discuss any risks that may be present and how the surgery may benefit you down the line. This first meeting will generally go over your past medical history, a physical examination, a few photographs of your nose at various angles, and the aforementioned expectations for the procedure. You should cease taking any aspirin or ibuprofen at least one week before the surgery takes place and then two weeks after the surgery has concluded. These medications have been found to increase postoperative bleeding in patients.

Septoplasty Cost

The cost for septoplasty can vary depending on numerous factors. Currently, the average cost for the procedure is around $3,320 to $5,235. This cost generally does not include the operating room, anesthesia, and the prescription medication required after the septoplasty surgery has been completed. This procedure is also covered by most medical insurance, when done for purely medically necessary reasons. Dr. White and his staff can help you to determine whether or not you might be an appropriate candidate for this surgery to be covered under your medical insurance at your consultation.

Potential Risks of a Septoplasty

Like any surgery, there are potential risks involved when undergoing septoplasty, although these risks are quite rare. These risks include:

  • Excessive bleeding
  • Scar inside the nose
  • Infection
  • A change in the shape of the nose
  • An opening of the septum wall
  • A reduced sense of smell

Recovering from a Septoplasty

very mildly swollen, slightly painful

Following the successful completion of the procedure, our Miami septoplasty patients will generally find their nose is very mildly swollen, slightly painful, and packed with cotton and a splint inside the nose to prevent excessive bleeding. This packing can be removed two days after the surgery and your doctor may prescribe pain medication to help with the sensitivity and pain experienced. Again, you should avoid the use of aspirin or ibuprofen. Ultimately, septoplasty for a deviated septum is a very gratifying surgery to help patients breathe better and to decrease snoring for a better night of sleep. If you snored before surgery, it doesn’t hurt that this surgery may help the people in the rest of your sleep better too!
